Anthony Volpe Is A Gold Glove Winner
Anthony Volpe is the first New York Yankee rookie to win the Gold Glove. This comes after an impressive defensive showing in his rookie season, where he beat out Corey Seager and Carlos Correa. Correa is a former platinum glove winner and is widely considered one of the, if not the best, defenders at the Shortstop position. For Volpe to beat out a player of Correa’s quality in his rookie season makes his defensive campaign more impressive. Before the season’s beginning, Volpe was not even seen as the Yankees best defensive shortstop. That was fellow rookie Oswald Peraza, whom Gerrit Cole deemed to have an equal glove to the aforementioned Carlos Correa. Volpe will look to build on this impressive display and hopefully emulate former Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter. The Captain won 5 gold gloves over his major league career.
Where Volpe Will Look To Improve
Volpe had a great defensive campaign in his rookie year, but he is more touted for his offensive capabilities. Along with winning the AL Gold Glove award, Volpe was the first Yankee rookie to have a 20,20 season. Though his OPS+ 81 was below league average and something he will drastically want to improve upon. Nevertheless, Volpe showed signs of improvement at the end of last season and will look to build upon his rookie campaign, where he looked overmatched in the early going. Since Volpe has a full Major League season under his belt, one could see him taking a significant step forward in 2024. The Yankees will be banking on the steady growth of Volpe, hoping he will become a mainstay at shortstop. He is expected to be a huge part of the Yankees lineup because of his combination of speed and power.
If Volpe can show the contact ability from the minors, then the Yankees may have a great player on their hands. Despite being 22 the Yankee believe Volpe will be the corner stone for the next generation of baby bombers. His gold glove is further proof of Volpe’s great potential.
